Cameron Geddes obtained a B.A. degree in physics from Swarthmore College in 1997, and received the American Physical Society Apker Award for the outstanding undergraduate thesis that year for work on equilibria of Spheromak plasmas. From 1997 through 1999 he was a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and from 1999-2000 at Polymath Research working in the laser plasma interactions program.

He received the Ph.D. in 2005 (following the M.A. in 2003) from the University of California Berkeley, where he was supported by the Hertz fellowship and the National Defense Science & Engineering Fellowship. His thesis comprised experimental development and particle in cell simulations of the first plasma guiding of a relativistically intense laser pulse, and the resultant production of a high quality electron beam for the first time from a high gradient laser wakefield accelerator. He received the Hertz foundation thesis prize in 2005, as well as the American Physical Society Rosenbluth Award in 2006, for the outstanding doctoral dissertation.

He joined in the LOASIS program of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2000 for his Ph.D. research and is presently a staff scientist in the group. He has twice received the LBNL outstanding performance award, once for his thesis research, and again for experiments on long scale guiding and GeV laser acceleration in capillary waveguides.

He is presently pursuing research on laser acceleration and high energy density matter, with principal foci on controlled guiding of intense laser pulses in plasmas and controlled injection of particles into laser wakefield accelerators. These projects are directed towards stabilizing the beams produced in laser accelerators, building on our recent demonstration of low energy spread beams to produce reliable high quality next generation accelerators. Recent experiments have demonstrated controlled injection of electrons into the laser accelerator structure by using a tapered plasma density or 'downramp', resulting in reproducibile bunches with very low absolute momentum spread. Other experiments are investigating injection using counter-propagating laser pulses (see for instance Esarey, PRL v.79 no.14 pp.2682-2685). Experiments on controlled guiding are being continued to stabilize laser propagation and hence generate a repeatable accelerating structure. Recent experiments on long scale length guiding in capillary channels have accelerated electrons to GeV energies in 3 cm. Together, control of accelerating structure and injection offer a path to reproducible high quality electron bunches.

Particle in cell simulations are conducted in parallel with experiments to guide and assist in understanding the experiments, as well as to further understanding of the importance of numerical parameters to simulation results. These simulations were supported by an INCITE grant of 2.5 million hours from the Department of Energy for 2006. This grant and continued large scale allocations in 2007-8 are allowing realistic modeling in two and three dimensions to optimize laser accelerators.

His general research interests include intense laser interactions with plasmas for laser driven advanced particle accelerators and radiation sources as well as fusion. Other interests include plasma simulations, nonlinear optics, magnetized plasmas, gas dynamics and nozzle flows.
